It began by looking up
On holiday, we first photographed what probably finds its way into every album: the sea, a square, the food on the table. Then we noticed that more and more tiles were making their way into those pictures.
We stopped in front of façades, took a few steps back in courtyards and searched for the point where a pattern began to repeat. Sometimes it was a single cobalt-blue tile; sometimes an entire wall gave a place its unmistakable mood.
The collection grew with every journey. Morocco brought the precise stars and interlaced lines of zellij; Italy added the warmth of maiolica, and Mexico its luminous ceramic worlds. Every region told a different story through clay, glaze and pattern.
An idea allowed to take its time
Back home, the photographs became more than holiday memories. We returned to the folders, compared colours and shapes, and wondered why these patterns had stayed with us.
For several years, AZULEJOS remained an idea we kept talking about. There were notes and early sketches, but no finished game – only the sense that our fascination might become something of its own.
The decisive thought was simple: what if you could assemble these patterns yourself? Not as a traditional puzzle with hundreds of pieces, but one move at a time, with limited space, a view of the next fragments and small decisions that slowly become a complete picture.
The question became designs, and the designs became a first playable prototype. Step by step, the essentials came into focus: four fragments, one calm decision after another, and finished tiles that do not disappear but become part of a growing collection.
We did not want to make a game that fights for your attention. We wanted to create a place you would enjoy returning to for a few quiet minutes.
The journey should keep growing
AZULEJOS should feel like that moment on a journey when you stop and, for a while, see nothing but colours, shapes and details. No noise and no time pressure – just enough tension to hold your attention.
Every finished tile leaves something behind. Small motifs gradually grow into an entire place, and individual rounds become a personal collection of ceramic art.
No chapter should simply paint a new colour over the same pattern. Every stop needs its own signature, atmosphere and motifs rooted in its ceramic tradition.
Today our journey spans ten places, from Lisbon to Valencia. Each brings different colours and stories. What began as a collection of travel photographs has found its playable form in 120 levels.
120 levels take you through ten places: Lisbon, Naples, Fes, Sicily, Isfahan, Seville, Delft, Puebla, Istanbul and Valencia. Each chapter has twelve levels and its own ceramic world. We are preparing AZULEJOS for its iPhone release.
